Push Pull Introduction

Year upon year the artists that graduate from MA
Fine Art rise to the challenge of presenting an
ambitious showcase as the culmination of their
experience on the course. The artists presenting here
are no exception. In a number of ways, each of them
has challenged their preconceptions and cultivated a
sense of openness in relationship to a range of
theoretical propositions and contemporary contexts.
For many it has been a roller coaster ride with scary
inclines and dramatic plunges, while for others there
has been a sense of studious contemplation.
The course demands a very high level of engagement
with contemporary art practice and critical thought as
a way of establishing a renewed and informed
dialogue with art. The title of the exhibition, Push Pull,
is evocative of this state of play, of the pushing and
pulling of knowledge and understanding, of the
stretching of thoughts and ideas, and of the
examination and scrutiny of the production of art. The
diversity of the work on show testifies to this
engagement and in turn enables these artists to
locate their work within an array of appropriate
contemporary contexts. Through discussion and
critical reflection there have been numerous twists and
turns, some leading to cul de sacs while others have
led to open fields. Of course both are worthy of
investigation and although one may signify a returning
home while the other marks the wildest of adventures
both are concerned with our experiencing of and
encounter with the work of art.
