MA Fine Art Show 2007 Everything Changes

The MA Fine Art course is renowned regionally, nationally and internationally for the high quality of the work produced; the relationship fostered between art and philosophy defines it as unique. The course is one of the longest established courses in the country with a reputation to match its history. The educational experience it offers is intrinsically bound up with its city centre location within the Department of Art and it is this experience, alongside a sense of history and continuity that attracts artists from all over the world. This year’s show also presents the work of artists from the Art and Education course who have developed their individual practice within particular educational contexts towards the reinvigoration of art education itself.

Contemporary Fine Art practice is by definition truly interdisciplinary and the courses encourage artists to expand and develop their knowledge and understanding of the complexity at play through their acuity of engagement and the resolution of a final show.  Each year, and this year is no exception, the artists presenting work have challenged their preconceptions towards the cultivation of a sense of openness in relationship to a range of theoretical propositions and contemporary contexts.

The Art Based Masters Courses demand a very high level of critical engagement with contemporary practice in the arts as a way of establishing a renewed and informed dialogue with art. This year’s show testifies to this engagement, and through the presentation of a diversity of specific disciplines and interdisciplinary art practices, has enabled these artists to locate their work within an array of appropriate contemporary contexts. Experimentation, discussion and critical reflection are central to any such experience and we hope you’ll agree that all concerned have demonstrated a high level of ambition for their work and a great sense of adventure.

With these thoughts in mind we hope you enjoy the show.
